Volume 2 of the English and Scottish popular ballads contains most of my favorites because it has all (or most) of the tragic love ballads. For some reason Sheath and Knife isn't included. I can't remember if it's in another volume, but I think it's in another edition of volume 2. (I would think it would count as a tragic love ballad, anyway.)Anyway, I have always loved certain traditional British ballads as sung by Joan Baez and various other folk singers. I was thrilled to find these "Child ballads" for free in the public domain and to read many other ballads that are no longer commonly sung and that have not been recorded by any folk singers that I know of.
A ballad is like a poem / song and a story at the same time. It's basically a very short romance, generally with lots of melodrama! Any fans of Medieval romance and / or romanticism in general should enjoy them. The other volumes are great also. But the tragic love ballads tend to be my favorites.

I research old ballads for several singing groups. These (Vol 1-6 in paperback; 1-8 on ) are my go-to books.
