After five weeks of dry weather, the fields and roads of Lancashire are suddenly flooded by heavy Bank Holiday rain.

Roads are blocked, streams become impassable, and debris that has lain stagnant in the summer weeks is uprooted.

Among that debris - a body.

Detective Inspector Peach, with the help of Detective Sergeant Lucy Blake, must solve a case that, had it not been for the freak weather, would have lain undiscovered for years.

The body is identified as Father John Bickerstaffe.

But who would want to kill a man of religion who was widely respected in the local community?

As DI Peach and DS Blake delve into the life of the Priest, they soon discover that he is not the only victim in this case...

When the Bishop Hogan summons them to reveal shocking details of the secret life of Father Bickerstaffe, they realise that he had a terrible secret.

A secret which caused not only his downfall, but also his death.

Recently disgraced, Father Bickerstaffe left a wealth of potential killers in his wake.

As the case unravels, and the potential suspects stretch from religion to politics, DI Peach and DS Blake must ask, how far would a parent go to protect, or to avenge, their child?

A Turbulent Priest is a gripping crime thriller by a master of the genre.

A Turbulent Priest Inspector Peach Series Book 4 eBook J M Gregson

I had tried the Lambert and Hook series by J M Gregson and didn't enjoy them, but I thought I'd check out his other series. Percy Peach is much more to my liking. A single, middle-aged man (physically resembling Christie's Hercule Perot) is a dogged cop, relentlessly pursuing perpetrators. Thus, it resembles many police procedurals. It is in the relationship between Percy and his superior, Tommy Tucker, that these books are different. Percy, has little respect for his pompous superior, and consistently baits him in verbal battles that end just this side of subordination. It is the exchanges between Percy and his superior that lift this series above the level of the usual procedurals. Also, his relationship with his young sergeant, Lucy, provides interest. The books are well plotted, with the identity of the bad guy undetermined until the conclusion. Also, in this book, the subject is sexual abuse by a Catholic priest. The subject is treated straightforwardly but without dwelling on the physical details of the crime. A nice balance.

A Turbulent Priest Inspector Peach Series Book 4 eBook J M Gregson Reviews

enjoyed reading the book
This Percy Peach mystery deals with the sensitive issue of paedophilia within the clergy of the Catholic Church. A body found in a swollen river during an unusually heavy downpour turns out to be that of a local priest who had been murdered. In the course of his investigation, Detective Inspector Percy Peach learns that the priest was already in trouble within the church for "inappropriate contact with a number of young boys." The obvious murder suspects are the parents of the molested boys.
Once again, Peach is faced with a handful of unlikely suspects and has to use all of his experience to work out who the murderer is. All the while, his ongoing battle with his superior, Chief Superintendent Thomas Tucker rages on providing humorous interludes to ease the tension of the case.
The Percy Peach series of books is a largely overlooked series that I feel fortunate to have discovered. The Mysteries are clever, the characters are strangely endearing even though they're not trying to be and the result is that I'm more than happy to keep coming back for more.
Percy Peach and Lucy Blake are back at it (in more ways than one) in this installment in the series, which centers around the death of a pedophile priest. That aspect of the story is handled with aplomb, as the two detectives are dogged in their investigation of whodunnit -- the why is pretty well established from the beginning. Gregson knows what he's doing in these books, and his experience and expertise should be encouraged. I'm looking forward to the next.
An unusually ferocious rainstorm unearths a murdered corpse in Lancashire, England and Detective Inspector Percy Peach and Detective Sergeant Lucy Blake discover the victim was a local priest. During their investigation the detectives learn that the priest was suspected of molesting boys in the church youth club. Of course the shocked and angry families of the boys become suspects in the murder. Moreover, the priest seems to have been associated with a child porn ring, the members of which are anxious not to be exposed. Could they have shut up the priest so he didn't get an attack of conscience and report them? Plenty of suspects in this cozy mystery, and some interesting characters. The detectives have a nice rapport between them and I liked the priest's housekeeper, a devoted lady determined to see the best in the priest and to defend his reputation. I thought the book was a pretty good light mystery.
Never can work out which of the books I prefer - Peach or Lambert &Hook mysteries.
This has the humour of the Tucker having the money taken out of him, yet the story is a serious one, pretty topical now. Well written as always and invokes mixed feelings for the crime.
I really find Gregson a strong writer, who lets the story stand on its own, no need for indiscriminate violence or sex which most books seem to rely on these days with the excuse of realism. Wish other writer would understand that some of us read to escape realism, I certainly want a puzzle with justice in the end.
